4. Cinematic adaptations are simply that, artistic adaptations. There is nothing holding us back from reimagining any significant classical works in any way we want. If renaissance era artists could do it, so can Christopher Nolan who is indubitably a master in his craft.
So, this brouhaha over Lupita Nyong'o's role as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey boils down to just one thing: racism.
Funny facts:
1. Homer never describes Helen of Troy in the Iliad. Only that she's like a goddess
2. The ancient world was more complex and diverse than what 20th Century cinema depicted. There were a lot of Ethiopian women and men across the "classical" regions e.g. Solomon's wife according to Song of Songs was very much likely Nubian.
3. Lupita Nyong'o is undoubtedly beautiful enough to plausibly be the "most beautiful woman in the world". 1/2
