If feasible I'd even integrate some #Datacasting like Toosheh, but that's patented according to them.

Toosheh - Wikipedia

But for those that don't know, #Toosheh is a pretty cool #datacasting tech which yeets stuff down at 51dBW directly onto #Iran, thus is pretty hard to jam or even detect, as propably a regular wok with a cheap LNB on a broom duct-taped to it can do the reception.

So if you know anyone stuck in #Iran and having to deal with #InternetCensorship and #internetOutage / #InternetBlackout / #InternetShutdown there, and they happen to have a DVB-S Reciever with "PVR ready" function (i.e. recording to a USB drive), Satellite Dish & LNB [all 3 are illegal to own in Iran, so best not ask them over the phone!] recommend them to shove a 4 GB Stick into it and let it record for >1 hour, then end the recording and use their application to extract the files in it.

  • The program loops hourly, so it can be programmed for recording when noone else is using the Reciever (i.e. late at night, early morning or at lunchtime)...

The parameters for the reciever are:

YahSat-1 @ 52,5°E
11.766 MHz / 11,766 GHz
Vertical Polarization
DVB-S (QPSK, 0,35 ROF, 16200+Pilot
27.500 kSymbols/s
FEC 7/8

They should find a station with a green title card and text in Persian.

All that's needed beyond the reciever is a Device with either Linux, Android or Windows to run their decoder tool.

  • AFAICT the package is substantial (~ 2GB) and should contain multimedia, VPN/Proxy details and @torproject / #TorBrowser as well as instructions.

Interestingly, #Toosheh is not listed on #LyngSat, cuz from what I can read it should be in that MUX on 52,5°E Al Yah 1 @ 11,766GHz (Vertical) with DVB-S (27.500 KSym/s & FEC 7/8).

https://www.netfreedompioneers.org/toosheh-datacasting-technology/

And it's not as if LyngSat doesn't list Data MUXes or anything (They literally show Satellite Internet Feeds), but even then Toosheh does send a custom screencard as they MUX their data in a way that consumer Sat Recievers will record it like additional audio tracks, which is different from your regular #SatelliteInternet or #Satellite #Data #Feed channels that require custom hardware and settings.

Does anyone have the full #specifications for IrDA #archived somewhere?

Because I'm looking for a good, short-range protocol that is less complex than #LiFi * for a "digital dead drop".

Most notably because USB dead drops have a shitton of disadvantages as #USB is not designed for that in mind, is extrenmely susceptible to sabotage and vandalism as a #PirateBox *, less complex than #FreedomBox * for #Sneakernet * operations.

Given the IrDA spec is relatively simple on the physical interface, reimplementing it with visible light would allow for more options espechally when it comes to "broadcasting" data to multiple devices when #datacasting like #Toosheh * would be overkill...

How the battle for #democracy will be fought — and won

"The government cut off internet access in parts of Kurdistan, Tehran and elsewhere, according to NetBlocks, which tracks internet outages. Iran’s theocratic rulers apparently intended to keep demonstrators in the dark about protests spreading in neighboring towns and cities. Both WhatsApp and Instagram were shut down.

But a little-known channel helped millions of Iranians stay in the know. A nongovernmental organization in Los Angeles, #NetFreedom Pioneers, had created a method to bypass the internet entirely and broadcast files — text, audio or video — from commercial satellites to anyone with a receiver dish. It is called Toosheh, or Knapsack. The group collected photos and news reports from social media platforms and elsewhere, uploaded them to a satellite and then down to homes in blacked-out Iran. The news was easily shareable on a flash drive."

For more than a decade and a half, autocracy has been steadily advancing around the globe. Democracies need to take action.
