The Three Hares : a real Devon motif with seventeen of them on church roof bosses compared to one or two in other counties.

Three hares in a circle sharing three ears that form a triangle. Design comes from C6th Buddhism in China via Islam & Judaism to late medieval Devon. Beautiful example in Sampford Courtenay church. 📸: Sue Andrew

On the train into London where The Australian is speaking at a conference in memory of David Singmaster, mathematician, metagrobologist, and dear friend.

One of his fascinations was with the ancient and far-flung pattern of The Three Hares, and he was always seen with a drawstring bag with that pattern on, from which he would take puzzles or oddities with which he would baffle us.

So I've prepared a version of the pattern to stitch while I listen to the talks.

Clever people of the Interwebs, do you know what this bird is? It's a picture in my advent calendar and we think maybe a wagtail or long-tailed tit. Any thoughts?
