Fall Break – Sørsidevegen & Solvorn

Last autumn, we stayed for a week along the Lustrafjorden in western Norway. On one of the days, we decided to do a donut around our arm of the fjord to explore the villages of Skjolden, Ornes and Solvorn.

Sørsidevegen is a tiny road that winds along the fjord from Skjolden, a town at the very end of Lustrafjorden, past Feigefossen (the waterfall we could see from our rental across the fjord) and ends at the village of Ornes. We wanted to check out the Urnes Stave Church but there was a construction crew outside so we just took a quick peek before we boarded an old ferry that chugged us across Lustrafjorden to the very cute village of Solvorn.

Here are some images captured along Sørsidevegen as well as in the village of Solvorn last fall.

White houses in Skjolden across the turquoise waters of a river that is about to enter the Lustrafjorden Looking from Skjolden over Lustrafjorden The tiny Sørsidevegen Farms with a partial view of Feigefossen (our view from our rental was better, actually) Some shaggy friends on the hillside Signs of fall (which came late again this past year) A small set of twin falls along the roadway Urnes Stavkyrkje apparently having gotten some beauty work done Looking through a porthole in the ferry at the village of Solvorn (most car ferries in Norway are now electric so this old chugger was a bit of a throwback) A large tree next to the oldest family-run hotel in Norway Some of the trees in Solvorn were just starting to turn as colorful as the rorbu Rocks and red rorbu Looking the other way from the beach Close on the colorful rorbu Just a couple of buoys having a break Someone’s tiny cottage Another look at rocks and rorbu The diving platform Can’t get enough of rocks and rorbu See how the turquoise water looks in the shallow, sandy areas near the beach #Architecture #church #Churches #Fjord #Norway #Ornes #Photoblog #Photography #Sheep #Solvorn #Travel #Waterfalls
In late March, St Clement Danes Church, London, holds a ceremony in which oranges & lemons are given out to local schoolchildren. The church claims to be the one in the famous 'Oranges & Lemons' rhyme - these fruits were once brought ashore at a nearby quay. The church's bells play the rhyme's tune three times a day. Confusingly, another London church - St Clement's Eastcheap - also claims to be the one in the rhyme and ships unloaded citrus fruits close to it too. St Clement Danes features as an eerie ruin in George Orwell's 1984 as does the Oranges and Lemons rhyme. #FairytaleTuesday #history #folklore #churches #London #literature #books
How these P.E.I. churches are renovating to make services more accessible
Some churches on P.E.I. are renovating to make service more accessible, which includes changes to accommodate all different kinds of needs. But renovating churches that are over 100 years old comes with challenges.

🇫🇷 Impressions du village de Martué (BE).

(https://qrwallonie.be/Florv010)

🇬🇧 Impressions of the village of Martué (BE).

1. When arriving from Florenville by the long distance path (GR), we have to follow the road up to the bridge over the Semois and its large trees. Not too much traffic on Sunday but so many empty cans abandoned along the road... 😞

2. Crossing the bridge, we discover this house which bears well its name, and no, there is no orange agent around! It is a rural lodging

3. A rare monument, the Martué Cross of Justice comes straight from the 14th century. On the explanatory plaque next to the cross, we can read in old French: Matin wé which became Martué by deformation. (https://qrwallonie.be/QR/Florv011)

4. The Saint-Roch chapel was erected in the 17th century on equest of village residents who complained about not being able to go to Florenville for the divine office during winter floodings. (https://qrwallonie.be/Florv010)
