Care to join us for a two part discussion of Robin Wall Kimmerer's "The Serviceberry"? Our Disaster Reading Group, which has been meeting since shortly after Hurricane Helene, has picked this essay-length book on mutuality in nature for the May 12th and June 2nd meetings! This is a perfect chance for new folks to jump in 🤠

As Kimmerer explains, “Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.”

"The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World" is a bold and inspiring vision for how to orient our lives around gratitude, reciprocity, and community, based on the lessons of the natural world. This series is co-facilitated by Lauren Miller.

On May 12th, we're discussing pages 1 through 50 but you're welcome to join us even if you can't complete the reading! Learn more and find discounted copies of the book at https://firestorm.coop/events/3392-the-serviceberry-a-disaster-reading-group.html

The Serviceberry: A Disaster Reading Group

This post-Helene reading group decided to detour into a shorter reading before selecting its next, extended journey. Enter Robin Wall Kimmerer's The Serviceberry, an essay meditation on mutuality in nature!

Yesterday I read a lovely little book — only 130 pages. It’s called The Serviceberry, and it’s by First Nations botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer. It’s about abundance and reciprocity in nature, and using that as a metaphor for a different way of looking at economies. Kimmerer talks about how different gift economies have existed historically, and still exist today in many contexts.

It’s a lovely, refreshing read, with hand-drawn illustrations of the nature being discussed. When you’re living in end-stage capitalism, this book is like a hike in nature on a spring day.

i gifted a copy of #theServiceberry to a friend of mine who lives out in rural NC because i know she loves plants and we're generally on the same page about stuff. turns out she'd already read #robinWallKimmerer's other two books. 💚

she returned the gift by giving me three berry bushes (two beauty, one elder), which i planted in our backyard over the weekend.

In The Serviceberry: An Economy of Abundance, Robin Wall Kimmerer offers a profoundly insightful exploration of how the principles of reciprocity and generosity — so deeply embedded in the natural world — can inspire a reimagining of our human economies.
