Happy Release Week 2026 - Dylan Madeley dot com

With the April 1st release of The Last Gift-Knight, it has been a busy week for me. Release day eve held big emotions and reflections and I spent it by myself, while the actual day was spent over with a cousin who had invited me to celebrate. We drank beer and watched the Artemis II launch.

A troubled wanderer is summoned to serve as the personal guard of a rival family. He follows the route of a heroic ancestor through storied places, the depths of loneliness and suspicion, and a growing question of what he must do.

A bookish princess struggles with grief, responsibilities, and the same conspiracy which accidentally empowered her. Soon she must contend with a troubled wanderer.

The most recent Goodreads review. Excerpt:

"Derek gets put in an impossible position where he's forced to be her bodyguard. To reach her kingdom, he has to travel through the scars, political and ecological, left by her ancestor. It was harrowing in the best way. Their stories dovetail much later in the book than I expected, and that tension between expectation and delivery was everywhere present in this book, from the worldbuilding to the characters. At every level, the author takes common settings and tropes and reworks them in subtle ways that made the story feel particularly rich.

I would just add that, if you're tired of slang or modern-sounding dialogue in your fiction and want a high fantasy that really reads like it, this book is for you."
