Leigh Brackett (1915–1978), born on December 7, was an American science fiction author nicknamed the Queen of Space Opera. She wrote planetary adventures like The Long Tomorrow and Shadow Over Mars, winning Retro Hugo awards and entering the Science Fiction Hall of Fame; she also wrote an early script for The Empire Strikes Back.
