The Devil Makes Three | the PROPAGANDA site

The Devil Makes Three is a traditional folk trio of string instruments (guitar, banjo, bass) bringing together bluegrass, ragtime, and blues influences to create an old-timey style. They have been going on since the early '00s without any radical change in their music other than the increased involvement of electric instruments and the inclusion of steel pedal and drums, while their overall sound remains in the same range. That said, they did tilt somewhat in the alt country direction on 2019's Chains Are Broken, whose effects still linger in their current work. Songwriters Pete Bernhard and Cooper McBean both have a way of channeling an authentic, traditional feel in their songs. Note that their 2016 album Redemption & Ruin is an album of covers that pulls from a wide array of sources, ranging from Robert Johnson to Tom Waits.
