At the beginning of September last year, I created a little terrarium as part of an activities weekend. I was (and am!) very pleased with it. It's been perfectly happy for 5 months and has never been opened. It contains ivy, fittonia, moss, and, noticed for the first time this week - fungus gnats!!! I haven't noticed any flying, but there are dead ones stuck to the glass.
So, were the eggs already there? Did one get in through the cork lid? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Dutch hobbyist Alwyn Wils documented the entire process of rescuing and raising an abandoned purple swamphen egg. Watch as this tiny chick grows into a beautiful bird with surprisingly large feet that are well-adapted for wetland life.

I created a new obsession for myself #Gardening #terrariums

everything toy's learned thus far about an alternative terrarium substrate mix. Not the usual layered method with drainage, filtration, & soil. This mix has ideas from semi-hydroponics & planted aquariums. Springtails can also be added later as needed for cleanup.

by combining all the necessary substrate layer functions, maintenance becomes "simpler" & the setup looks cleaner. Its proposed approximate recipe is 2 parts inactive : 1 part charcoal : 1 part aquasoil, with all parts measuring granules around 3mm, just avoid a completely sandy mixture.
🌿 reddit source for using aquasoil in terrariums:

Michikusa uses another ratio of roughly 2 parts akadama : 1 part fuji sand : 1 part charcoal. This seems to work well too, so the aquasoil could be entirely unnecessary for moss & certain plants...
 Michikusa's substrate explanation:

🌿 Michikusa terrarium video example:

with both recipes, it's fine to mix in an extra part of an inactive ingredient. Michikusa does that for certain builds to add color and those terrariums are probably dandy

I found this in a neighbor's yard, by the road.

By the time I got it home, the cracked area fell out.

Kinda cool.

I gently broke the rest of the bottle and set the little ecosystem free in my woods.

Even if the bottle had some fluid left when it was tossed, life found away in through the cracks and over a few seasons, it grew, decayed and grew again.

The nursery down the road from me has the most beautiful monsteras I’ve ever seen. #plants #plantlady #plant #monstera #indoorplants #houseplants #ferns #nursery #exoticplants #terrariums
