18 Days til Open Qualifying… and it’s in there 👀👀👀
How do I summarise The Northern Open, played at the stunning @[email protected] ? I arrived with high expectations, having played some decent golf over the past few weeks. However, reality hit hard during the first round. I had three double bogeys in a row, thanks to the thick, unforgiving gorse bushes. A first round of 77 (+6) meant I was miles miles away from the leaders and my own expectations. I believe it was these expectations and a bit of fatigue which scuppered me… a lesson to be learnt.
I do want to congratulate Haydn McCullen on his incredible 59 during the 1st round!! His playing partners also shot 69 and 79, respectively which must be a first-time in golf history? If you’re a golf researcher, let me know!
The second round dawned, and I felt a bit more relaxed. I decided to switch off my analytical mind and just enjoy the game. The conditions were more challenging, with rain, wind and fighter jets flying low from nearby RAF Lossiemouth, but my golf improved significantly. I was able to shape my shots and focus less on my swing. I also putted well, finishing with a 68 (-3).
It’s my best score in a competition this year and although I haven’t played in many due to injury and time away it’s given me a boost of confidence and a renewed hope for Open Qualifying and the PGA Championships next week.
I want to thank @[email protected] for putting on an amazing event and Moray Golf Club for being such a wonderful host venue. I’m already looking forward to getting out on the links again 👊 #TrustTheProcess
