Su Giorgia Meloni si abbattono le rovine di questo referendum. Più che la sua leadership nel centrodestra sarà in discussione la propria capacità di resistere a palazzo Chigi anche nella prossima legislatura. Fino a ieri (forse fino alle 15 di oggi) la sua personalità è parsa così forte che persino l’opposizione non ha mosso parola quando lei ha spiegato che non si sarebbe dimessa in caso di sconfitta al referendum. Troppo forte lei, troppo diviso e ancora fragile il campo largo.
Invece questo risultato non offre solo un giudizio pesante sulla riforma della magistratura ma ha illustrato che gli italiani, quando ritengono che la posta in gioco sia alta, scendono in campo, corrono al voto e decidono. E la quantità di elettori, di molto superiore alle attese, aggiunge sale alle ferite di Giorgia. Le crepe della sua leadership oggi sono evidenti, la sua popolarità è in caduta libera (siamo al 32 per cento di chi apprezza), la sua forza è nettamente ridimensionata.
Adesso – ancor prima di fare i conti con il centrosinistra – la presidente del Consiglio deve mettere ordine nel proprio partito dove gli scandali si susseguono e l’ultimo, quello che vede al centro il sottosegretario Delmastro, è di una gravità senza pari. Poi dovrà regolare i patti con gli alleati i cui segni di nervosismo sono già visibili e le dissociazioni saranno prevedibilmente numerose nel prossimo futuro. Infine, ma non per ultimo, Meloni dovrà decidere come posizionarsi con Donald Trump. Il trumpismo si è infatti trasformato nella malattia autoimmune della destra europea, un’infezione cioè. Il costo dell’alleanza con il tycoon americano sta divenendo insopportabile.

The ruins of this referendum are collapsing around Giorgia Meloni. More than her leadership within the center-right, her ability to resist Palazzo Chigi – even in the next legislature – will be questioned. Until yesterday (perhaps until 3 PM today), her personality seemed so strong that even the opposition didn’t speak when she explained that she wouldn’t resign in the event of a defeat in the referendum. Too strong she was, too divided, and still fragile the broad coalition.
Instead, this result doesn’t just offer a harsh judgment on the reform of the judiciary, but has illustrated that Italians, when they believe the stakes are high, get involved, rush to the polls, and decide. And the quantity of voters, far exceeding expectations, adds salt to Giorgia’s wounds. The cracks in her leadership are now evident, her popularity is plummeting (at 32 percent of those who appreciate her), and her strength has been significantly reduced.
Now – even before reckoning with the center-left – the Prime Minister must restore order within her own party, where scandals are recurring and the latest one, which sees Undersecretary Delmastro at its center, is of unparalleled gravity. Then she will need to renegotiate agreements with allies, whose signs of nervousness are already visible, and dissociations will undoubtedly be numerous in the near future. Finally, but not least, Meloni will have to decide how to position herself with Donald Trump. Trumpism has indeed become the autoimmune disease of European right-wing, a contagion, therefore. The cost of the alliance with the tycoon American is becoming unbearable.
