Steve Goodman was an awesome folk musician from Chicago. He wrote the current Cubs theme song "Go Cubs Go", along with many other famous songs like "City of New Orleans" (made famous by Arlo Guthrie), and collaborations with John Prine. But my favorite is this one: "The Lincoln Park Pirates".

John Prine, Diamonds in the Rough, 1972 on Atlantic

This was Prine’s sophomore album, following the self-titled John Prine. Prine is joined by Steve Goodman, David Bromberg, Steve Burgh, and Dave Prine.

I just love Prine’s songwriting: “Souvenirs,” “Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You” and “Late John Garfield Blues” on this LP. He also does “Diamonds in the Rough” by AP Carter. Naming the LP after the one cover as a singer-songwriter is a bold move.

My copy, via the Worcester Record Riot, is a Monarch pressing with the Broadway address in the rim text.

John Prine, Sweet Revenge, 1973 on Atlantic

Prine is one of my favorite songwriters of all time. This was his third full-length, and third on Atlantic. Produced by Arif Mardin, it was mostly recorded in Nashville, with one track (“Dear Abby”) recorded live at SUNY New Paltz.

Musicians include Steve Goodman and many of the folks who played on Prine’s debut album. The cover photo is Prine in the Porsche convertible he bought following the success of his debut.

My copy, via Antone’s Records in Austin TX, is a 1973 pressing from PRC in Richmond.
