Sketching Walk: we wandered in a group along the quayside, pausing in a couple of places to paint or sketch, and the tutor (Ian Sedge) came around, offering encouragement and advice. He seemed slightly stunned that I chose such different media in the two places, but experimentation is very much part of #Sketchfest!

Sketching Cruise: This was another I was very keen to do, although I must admit, I hadn't quite anticipated the sheer terror involved!

Not because of the boat - a retired RNLI lifeboat, diesel engine replaced with an electric motor, whisper-quiet and beautifully stable - no, because speed sketching is a new adventure to me. I filled nearly an entire sketchbook with some very variable sketches, but I did feel that during the cruise I began to be better at it. Next time (note, I enjoyed it enough to contemplate a Next Time!) I'll take a different size of sketchbook, with less thirsty paper that accepts fibre tip more easily.

I added the colour afterwards, on dry land!

It's one of the most raw, vulnerable, and honest things I've ever written. Four years later, I still think it's well worth reading - especially if you have a difficult or abusive relationship with a parent or family member.

I have a much happier story to tell now than I did when I wrote this post, but it marks an important beginning. I feel so much wonder, to reread this and note how differently I feel about my #family now. There's a lot of pain between us that's hard to heal. But what I've learned is that, at least sometimes, even the people you know well will surprise you. Somehow, even with #dementia, my relationship with my #Mom is the best it's ever been. It's a gift I'd long since given up hoping for, and yet here we are. I'm grateful for this and for her - and also deeply mindful of what it felt like before this unexpected change in our relationship. So often, in so many parental relationships, that positive change never comes - and that is hard, hard, hard. So if this is you, I'm sending you extra love today.

OMG OMG OMG holy crap THE CROWS ACTUALLY CAME!
I usually only share really rough comics & WIPs with patrons, but I'm sharing this one with all of you because I'm so freaking excited I can't contain myself — or pry myself away from my perch behind the screen door.
I've been wanting to try making friends with the local crows for years now. I had this very conversation with one of my partners a few weeks ago, and having been called out for my inaction, I started putting food out for them now and then. But last week I started putting peanuts out for them more reliably, and practicing my crow calls to pique their curiosity. And holy freaking crap — once I started calling to them, THEY CAME.
