@Bronwyn

Well, they say that if you can travel the #SpeedOfLight, you will experience #TimeDilution & your perception of time will slow down time per the theory of #SpecialRelativity but then, while your perception of your won't change significantly but everyone else not traveling w/you will age much faster than you do. You could also put your body in #Cyrostasis, not that that's even possible yet 🤷‍♂️

Did you ever watch the movie #Intersteller (2014)?

It will explain everything. LOL!!!😉

PS: I'm with you . . . I turn 75 & my grandchildren will turn 10 & 7 this year too. 😮

I've just viewed a lecture from Carlo Rovelli, an Italian physicist, about the theories of TIME. It was a fascinating lecture to hear. Frankly, it all made sense and I can't wait to get hold of his book :The Order of Time.

There's a #misconception about the #timespace speed limit, the speed of light. It seems that if you're determined to travel to another galaxy you won't live to see it. But the truth is that you can actually travel arbitrarily fast, if you only consider the on-board, local time. If you forget what you're leaving behind, you can go anywhere as fast as you go. The Lorentz transform will take care of everything. You can get to Andromeda in a day. You can get there in a minute. Just need to go faster. Lorentz contraction will take care of it. You can get there in a second. You can go arbitrarily fast! The outside observer will see you frozen in time when traveling.

This is an old animation I had on VHS. I animated the train part (30 yrs ago?) with Mathematica on my NeXTdimension cube (using the graphic board NTSC Composite outputs). I renumerized it back from tape lately and added the scrolling text. Et aujourd'hui j'ai accolé l'intro musicale. Reste plus qu'à mettre des bips bips sonores lors de l'arrivée des impulsions lumineuses dans la partie 'train'...

This Particle Only Has Mass When Moving in One Direction

Particle physics is not everyone’s cup of tea.  A team of physicists have theorised the existence of a strange type of particle that behaves differently depending on its direction of travel—massless in one direction but possessing mass when moving the other way! This strange, elusive particle, known as a semi-Dirac fermion or “quasiparticle,” has actually … Continue reading "This Particle Only Has Mass When Moving in One Direction"

#Physics #SpecialRelativity Consider two relatively moving inertial reference frames (IRFs) A and B. You can select two Events for which A and B measure the *same* time interval between the two Events.

"What?" you say "But shouldn't there be time dilation?... shouldn't one measure the time interval as greater than the other?"

The time dilation equation is just one small part of a bigger picture.

As an exercise for the reader:

For anyone who has never come across them (or for those who have forgotten) "Reflections on Relativity" is a fantastic free resource (also available as a book) that discusses foundational etc. aspects of Special and General Relativity.

Probably not a great resource for learning from(?) but a great read if you already understand a reasonable amount. There's also some other good reads / references to his books on Math Pages website.
