Aram Khatchaturian -- Symphony No. 3 (Symphony-Poem) -- Chicago Symphony Orchestra , Leopold Stokowski conductor

This 1947 work in praise of the "Soviet Motherland" was condemned by Zhdanov as "formalistic".

I find this assessment difficult to understand. To my ears, this 24 minutes of vulgar bombast has more in common with the movies at their worst than with modernism.

Anyway, when the announcer on KMFA said that John Williams was coming up, that's when I knew it was time to switch off.

Continuing my investigation into Simon Morrison's The People's Artist. The main evidence he provides for "Prokofiev being lured" into the USSR is a 1925 official letter from Nadezhda Bryusova stating that Prokofiev would be free to travel, should he choose to return to the USSR. Prokofiev lost his travel rights on 1938, but this doesn't mean he was lied to. This evidence is invalid! Let’s break it down. 🧵 #Prokofiev #SovietMusic
Simon Morrison claims in The People's Artist that Prokofiev was lured into moving to the USSR under a false promise that his international career wouldn't change. But does he provide primary evidence for this? I looked into it. 🧵 #Prokofiev #SovietMusic

In The People's Artist, Simon Morrison claims that Prokofiev returned to the USSR due to a false promise that his international career wouldn’t change. But the only evidence he cites is Prokofiev’s letter exchange with Atovmyan, which documents a recruitment effort but, as far as I can tell, not the alleged guarantee. Highly suspicious... Here's Emil Gorovets' setting of the same poem which is much more of a cheerful triumphant anthem😅🎶 Really shows how the same text can be interpreted very differently. it's not that I dislike it, it's charming, but it doesn't have quite the same feeling of a repressed person screaming to be heard.

Feeling stressed by some bad news & these Prelues by Gayane Chebotarian are really hitting the spot. I was learning some of them a few years ago but never got to all of them. Really beautiful stuff by an underappreciated Soviet composer.
