the practice of mental suggestion (telepathic induction) which requires above
all the ability to concentrate in a most intensive manner on the “telepatheme,”

and, in some instances, L. L. Vasiliev, the director of the project, served as agents or senders.
Finally, the last really important (and also the most difficult) task of all was to find methods of mental suggestion which would achieve more perfectly than methods previously employed the aims of the planned psychophysical experiments.
It should be noted that it is possible to find, in the literature of the subject, descriptions of a number of different methods of mental suggestion, which fall into three classes according to the nature of the transmitted “telepathy”:
motor, sensory and hypnogenic.
At first we selected mental suggestion of simple acts of movement, and mental suggestion of visual images and sensations; thereafter of mentally waking up
and inducing sleep. These methods yielded, in many instances, unmistakably positive results which established the existence of mental suggestion as a fact.
But the first two methods proved less suitable for purposes of psychophysical experimentation. Experience taught that they either required a considerable period of time, or yield only “indeterminate” results which made them useless
for the purpose of providing the bulk of quantitative data essential for statistical calculation, which is of fundamental importance in experiments on mental suggestion. This was our principal reason for selecting from the methods enumerated above the procedure of mental alerting and lulling, or suggestion to wake up and go to sleep; a method which, in the course of our investigations,
gave us the most stable positive results...
