It's certainly solid, but it felt like it had the potential to be much more. My ★★★ review of Something in the Dirt (2022) on Letterboxd: https://boxd.it/52uBaP #SomethingInTheDirt #Horror #Letterboxd #Hooptober
A ★★★ review of Something in the Dirt (2022)

Film #29 of Hooptober X: In SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE I appreciate what Something In the Dirt is trying to do; I just don’t know that I entirely like how it gets there. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s pandemic film rips apart the notion of conspiracy theories in fairly brutal ways, and I’m always down for a film willing to go that route. And there is a decent amount to enjoy in this, including the on-screen performances from Benson and Moorhead as new neighbors who discover something supernatural going on in the newer arrival’s apartment. It’s clear that these guys are very comfortable

SOMETHING IN THE DIRT: Benson & Moorhead dress up their own creative partnership/friendship as a metafictional one that becomes a microcosm of a conspiratorial cult. A movie that goes nowhere and everywhere, because everything and nothing in movies is real.

Really dug the sinister, paranormal hangout movie vibe. An engaging, playful return to form after the disappointing SYNCHRONIC.

I finally watched #SomethingInTheDirt and as expected I loved it immensely but also, unexpectedly, it somehow turned out to be the perfect companion piece to the "Who Killed The KLF" documentary.
So that's my paranoid folie à deux double feature suggestion right there.
Spent the night enjoying the latest Moorhead and Benson movie, #SomethingInTheDirt. Everything they do is full of unexpected narrative trickery, and this felt like it piled meta-trickery on top of that. If you watch it in isolation it might seem straight-forward, but the other movies in this "series" complicate matters. You can also take it as a spoof of the glut of COVID movies we got that were relationship dramas set in one locale, except here there's also ghost crystals and gravity warping.
