Tragedy Inevitable on 'Slow' Lake Street, Advocates Warn - Streetsblog San Francisco

The battle continues between safety advocates and motorists who are again using Lake Street as a thoroughfare. It is now slow on paper only. Advocates warn that if the city doesn't act, it's only a matter of time before the unspeakable happens

Tomorrow, Sunday the 26th, join us on a Slow Streets Slow Ride to demand "a citywide network with no gaps," as SFMTA Director Yekutiel put it.

Meet: 1:00pm, Ghirardelli Square
Roll: 1:30pm

Our ride calls attention to how Slow Pacific, Clay and Lake provided a low-stress cross-city route nearly all the way from Ghirardelli Square to Ocean Beach. But Pacific is no longer a Slow Street. Let's bring it back!

6. We learned to work with other groups effectively: We helped Friends of #SlowLake thwart a plan to water down their slow street, we put our corking skills to use during the day everyone was out protesting the Roe V Wade decision and/or at the Trans March, and we helped get the word out about the 30th Anniversary of #CriticalMass and keep it safe - only one of us got hit by a car
I have a lot of thoughts on #SlowLake as someone who is probably a "middle case" user (drives daily, walks/busses regularly, never bikes), but my neighbor cussed out a rando over the weekend unprovoked, so it feels kind of a hot topic on my specific block. 😬
Advocates Celebrate Slow Lake, but Questions Remain

Why did SFMTA remove old but more robust signs before the vote, just to replace them with bendy straws? And is through traffic still banned?

Incredible community efforts this past weekend to activate #SlowLake street, celebrate it, and keep it safe.

That said, it's alarming Mayor Breed has now interfered with Slow Lake at least three times: 🧵

Anyway, there was much drama online it seems and also maybe earlier in the day when I was baking cookies, but #SlowLake was mostly great today. Everyone enjoyed the cookies, including several drivers.

“On Monday, SFMTA removed official signs/barriers from Lake Street. On Wednesday, the Mayor blocked the installation of official Slow Street infrastructure. On Friday, SFMTA installed inadequate infrastructure. So today, the community added signs/diverters to protect neighbors.”

On the bus to #slowlake and let’s hope that muni cooperates with me!
If you love Posting, please apply for a job at SFMTA. They’re inexplicably delayed in putting posts on recently approved #SlowLake Street.
