Don't ever sign a ballot initiative being circulated by someone not wearing a badge saying if they are paid or not and what the measure is

The law requiring wearing a badge might be basically unenforceable, but it's a good indication of their willingness to break other laws to trick you into signing something other than what you thought you were signing

Edit: this might be SF only

We love Muni. With hundreds of thousands of rides daily, Muni connects thousands of San Franciscans to friends, family, employment, school, and vital services.

That’s why we want to not only keep it running but make it better: frequent buses; maintaining and improving access to schools, libraries, and parks; and extend discounts like Free Muni for Youth.

So we’re introducing the Community Transit Act, a ballot initiative which will generate up to $30M per year for Muni operations by taxing ride-share companies like Uber, Lyft, and Waymo.

To get on the November ballot, we need to gather signatures from over 10,000 registered SF voters by July 8. We’re a grassroots coalition, made up of volunteers like yourself, and we need people like you to help gather signatures, organize, and get the word out. To get involved:

For years, Tesla and its supporters have waved away detailed investigations tying Autopilot's design to multiple deaths, claiming that the safety benefits outweighed them.

Now, finally, we have published academic work proving that Autopilot has no safety benefits, when you adjust the numbers for road type and driver age. In fact crashes appear to be 11% higher with Autopilot!

Huge thanks to Noah Goodall of the Virginia Transportation Research Council for this work!

Normalizing crash risk of partially automated vehicles under sparse data

The safety of increasingly automated vehicles is of great concern to regulators, yet crash rates are generally reported by manufacturers using proprietary metrics with limited source data. Without ...

What are the best places (bike/transit accessible) to see wildflowers in the Bay area right now (or more likely this weekend)

Does your public library use Overdrive/Libby for ebooks or audiobooks? ⚠️

In the US and Canada, the answer is probably yes. And you should speak to your library staff and commission about it.

Libby is now owned by a private equity firm & making sketchy changes: https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

The latest development is that their overbroad privacy policy allows them to sell your borrowing history to advertisers: https://infosec.exchange/@longobord/112243098104196246

Thank you @karawynn and @longobord!

The Coming Enshittification of Public Libraries

Global investment vampires have positioned themselves to suck our libraries dry

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

Elon Musk's Big Lie About Tesla Is Finally Exposed

NB: Toot amended with new quote, since article has been altered since I first copied and pasted from it

“When road safety researcher Noah Goodall adjusted the best publicly available data for factors like road type and driver age in a peer-reviewed paper, Tesla’s claim of a 43% reduction in crashes dropped to “only 10%… analysis showed that controlling for driver age would increase reported crash rates by 11%.”
