My great grandmother, Elizabeth Shirer (born Roger), with three of her daughters. She was a teacher, living at Kininmonth, by Mintlaw.

Sarah, left, died as a child. Jessie, by her Mum's side lived to her early 70s. Clara, pictured as an adult in the second image, married at 20, had 4 children, and died age 30 in 1936.

Annie's father, William, died single. My uncle's notes show she was born Annie Innes Fiddes to Jessie Fiddes, a farm servant who later married an Alexander Walker. This matches the information on her death certificate, but I've yet to find the record of Annie's birth in December 1873 or find her in censuses before she is at Loch Cottage in 1911.

The occupants of Loch Cottage, Kininmonth in 1906 and their 1911 census record. Kenneth McLean Shirer, middle is my great x 2 grandfather, born 1822. Margaret, left his daughter, and Annie, right his neice, daughter of Auld Cairnie (see post 17/1/23). As a collector of songs, she contributed over 260 texts to the Duncan-Greig collection before she died in her early 40s.

Loving the pieces coming together as I work through Uncle Jim's archive. Today, it is my gt x 3 uncle, 'Auld Cairnie' William Shirer, who died age 79 in 1906 of senile decay and exhaustion. He died single, but with a daughter Annie, who might pop up in a post soon.

People get intimidated by the shear size of this tome but it's entirely readable and you can skip over any boring parts (there aren't many), no one cares. Shirer was there for all of it, the real world Forrest Gump, and writes like the great wordsmith that he is. Anyone who loves military history will appreciate the larger story and gripping accounts.
You can do it, it's good.
