AI6YR BenFirst time this sewing machine case has seen daylight in a long time. The moldy cardboard, lint, and maybe cat or mouse fur in there is NASTY. Tossing this now that I have measured the hole and removed the machine. #sewingmachinerepair
The wiring on this is sketchy.
(not super sketchy... that is where it is cracked and shorting already)
sketchy = almost no flexibility to the wiring, probably will crack if you bend it enough. I am guessing late 1950's or 1960's wiring. All of the wiring will have to be replaced here for safety reasons, if you were renovating this machine as an electric. Since this going to be a treadle, I will probably separate out the parts and re-do the lamp wiring only.
Back to 3 sewing machines, LOL. The price was right (free on curb), and I have a treadle in need of a machine. I think this is an 1879 machine or so converted to electric in the 1930's or 1940's. I accumulate projects as fast as I complete them, ha ha. I am going to de-electrify this machine and cut a custom hole and build a support in the desk with treadle I have. #sewingmachinerepair #sewingmachine
Hmm, hopefully some lucky person is going to buy (or has bought) this for the machine, and not to pull this apart. (yes, these sewing machines seem to be falling from the sky here... too many people who do not sew, IMHO). All it needs is a new belt and oiling.
Had to tighten up the tension. This is a lot better.

1907 sewing machine with new belt
Funky smells seemed to be almost entirely gone. A combo of sunlight, air, ammonia window cleaner, lysol, and Murphy's old soap seemed to do the trick. Just wiped all of the surfaces of the cabinet with a light coating on linseed oil, as it looked like the wood needed some protection after stripping off all the old stinky dirt, did not want to induce any wood cracking so opted to do it sooner rather than later. The oil should protect this cabinet and also will seal any stinky odor particles in. Needle replaced (in theory). Now just need to let this dry and then put on the belt, test the new needle position. #sewingmachinerepair #sewing #antiques #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle
The details on this cabinet are fabulous. I fixed the bobbin winder with a new bobbin tire, still waiting for the replacement leather belt for the treadle. Removed 116 years of four different threads on the bobbin (moldy, stinky, smoky) and will rewind some. Was able to dislodge the needle (20x1, no longer made), will see if a new needle will hold. I guess most people just collect these as antiques instead of use them and keep them in working order.... #sewingmachinerepair #sewing #antique
