More Texas school districts sued over display of Ten Commandments in classrooms

A federal judge in August issued a temporary injunction blocking 11 school districts from implementing Senate Bill 10, the new Texas law requiring public schools to display the commandments. Fourteen additional school districts, including Conroe ISD, have now been sued by the same coalition of civil rights groups.

Conroe ISD plans to have Ten Commandments posters hanging in all its classrooms when students return after Labor Day weekend. District leaders initially said they would pause their rollout as they “await further guidance” from the courts.

Conroe ISD to display Ten Commandments after initially pausing rollout in response to court ruling

The school district north of Houston, although not directly impacted by a federal injunction that temporarily blocks the display of the commandments, initially said it would hold off on hanging them in its classrooms. Conroe ISD changed course after a directive from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Early Wednesday, a couple of dozen Texans who had waited nearly 20 hours to testify on a bill to require classrooms to post the Ten Commandments gathered in the hearing room to share their views. Most were there in opposition to the bill.
