Once the #SecondIntifada turned violent in the face of state repression, #Hamas let loose a series of horrific attacks on civilians, like on #ThisDayInHistory in 2003, with the #HaifaBus37Bombing. 17 Israelis were killed, 53 wounded, with many of them #UniversityOfHaifa students.
The #SecondIntifada began nonviolently, but by design media focussed on things like #ThisDayInHistory in 2002, when #PFLP set off a nail-studded suicide vest in a shopping mall in the illegal #WestBank settlement #KarneiShomron, killing three teenagers & injuring 27 other people.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 2004, #YasserArafat, long-time head of the #PLO, died in a suburb of Paris. The #Palestinian leader had fallen ill in October and was taken to France for medical care. In the years prior he was a virtual prisoner in #Ramallah due to the #SecondIntifada.

>> He can't say Israel didn't announce in 2005 that it was going to raze Gaza

Are you not aware of what happened between 2000-2005 in #Gaza?

#SecondIntifada

Or are you ok with what happened because #Jewish lives don’t matter?

As happened 30 and 50 years before, in the months after #CampDavid and well into the #SecondIntifada, the rhetoric was as militant as ever, and triumphalist too.

Moderates held that a #controlledOutbreak of #violence could improve the #Palestinian position in any future negotiation 🙄

Less-moderate voices hoped that violence could replicate #Hezbollah’s success in forcing a full #Israeli withdrawal from #Lebanon without Israel receiving anything in return

A generation after 1967, the #SecondIntifada involved no armies on distant fronts. There was a campaign of #terrorist attacks against #Israeli civilians… together with a campaign of #suicideBombings in Israeli cities.

In the #WestBank it looked less like either a #civilWar or a conventional war and more like an #asymmetricWar or a #counterinsurgency campaign by an occupying army that took years to settle down into a victory on the Israeli side.

This grotesque hijacking of #Hinduism by #Hindutva Movement is what precipitated destruction of #BabriMasjid in 1992

That's why I said there are #UncannySimilarities in #LKAdvani's #Ayodhya march to #BabriMasjid in 1992 and the inopportune trek by #ArielSharon to #AlAqsa on #TempleMount 9 yrs later.

There have been destruction & attempts to raze places of worship in #Jerusalem too for centuries, but not in 2001. It triggered #SecondIntifada though

Ok now I have some context about the timeframe. Regardless of timeframe or parties involved, "riots" are never "peaceful."

Dictionary def of riot is "violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd"

There have been destruction & attempts to raze places of worship in #Jerusalem too, for centuries, hence #UncannySimilarities.

The inopportune trek by #ArielSharon to #AlAqsa on #TempleMount in 2001, triggering #SecondIntifada, was similar to #LKAdvani marching to #BabriMasjid in 1992
