Or how some spill incidents get totally mismanaged?
Apparently there were some kids ripping along in the bush on some skidoos a couple winters ago.
They went into a small valley and rode out the other side - none-the-wiser that they had just *bursted a pipeline* (the "safest" mode of transport for oil)
So this pipeline starts spilling into the ground.... for MONTHS. UNDETECTED.
All the usual alarms & indicators?
Did *not* activate... b/c the pipeline was still flowing enough through the actual pipe to not set off a low-pressure alarm.
So that means there is enough pressure to not trip a low-pressure alarm.... and the difference in flow from before (a big number) suddenly changed to a small number - but not too small... with.... the difference now seeping into the dirt.
Quite a big spill.

This "safest mode of transport" is affected by frost heaves - for those that dont know, when the ground freezes over it tends to absolutely throw underground lines (piping, cables, etc.) Up in the winter & down in the spring... sometimes to the amount of meters over the course of a season.

So this pipeline heaved close to the surface, and a skidoo (dont know the size - but, of course, considerably smaller than any pickup and a fraction of the weight of larger trucks on backroads & whatnot in the bush. My point being that there are pipelines literally all over AB) cracked the line soooo
Idk will the climate shift cause greater heaves? Less heaves?
I genuinely dont know much about the environmental aspect here so open to more knowledge #ScienceMasto #science #SciencMastodon

From now on I plan to do a short story between each two longer chapters to shorten the wait! What do you think about this format? ✨

Some of you may know, I sometimes make #scienceIllustrations. Here is one I want to use to expand my portfolio – An ink drawing of a human #brain. See the blogpost on it:

If you like this, you can get it on #Redbubble on stickers, notebooks, cups etc.

TIL: #Butterflies are the vultures of the Insect Kingdom

Maybe they are also the vampires of the Insect Kingdom

Also some examples of anti-social behavior by butterflies:

butterflies can be distinctly diabolical

They are symbols of grace, but these insects have qualities that do not make it to children’s colouring books

@richardsever I'm not endorsing them, but these are some sciencey instances via my Debirdify list:
