M., Ed the dog, and I went to Ōtautahi to support the #SchoolStrike4Climate.

Ko wai ngā tamariki koi ngā hinengaro?

The kids are alright!

Last year I came home very disappointed with the lack of persons. So different from the heydays of the dawn of the movement, on the shoulders of the epic effort by Greta. Cathedral Square was near capacity back then. This year, no more people than last, but it's not knocking me back quite as it did last year. Older, more resigned? But still inclined to resist and murmer.

It was visually fun, being #PinkShirtDay, pink tutus on boys and girls, and such like.

Nice to see familiar faces amongst the few greying folk like myself. I've never shared more than a smile, I'm not normally social. John Minto is always there.

Anyhow, that's my report.

We're fucked. Sorry about that.

Heads up Ōtautahi. M. and I are going to support the kids tomorrow, May 15, at the Bridge of Remembrance. 1pm (midday?) as they continue their call for climate action from the government. More elves required.

A new generation of Elves?

How far is too far for our rangatahi? On Friday, rangatahi all over Aotearoa will walk out of school to protest the government's inaction toward climate change. For my son, just 13 years old, it will be his third school strike. Feel free to skip to the comments if you

Emily Writes Weekly

Here’s media coverage from today’s great #SchoolStrike4Climate.

It’s fantastic to see the young people of the city keeping the pressure on our politicians. We need to keep turning up the heat on our politicians to cool down our planet.

(I should add that my daughter was one of the organisers and I’m a proud Dad today. 😀)

The Press

My 7yo has announced his intention to join the #schoolstrike4climate next Friday. I asked him what he wanted to put on his protest sign, thinking it would be something cute about saving bumblebees but he suggested "Don't trust oil companies."

If you’re near central Ōtautahi-Christchurch, today is the latest #SchoolStrike4Climate. My daughter’s one of the students working hard to plan the event. They want pressure on the Christchurch City Council and the NZ government to step up in this time of crisis.

It starts at the Bridge of Remembrance 1PM. Everyone is welcome incl. adults. Make noise, have fun, and show solidarity with our rangatahi freaked out by NZ’s lack of climate leadership.

A Day Of Student-Led Action For Climate Justice And Indigenous Sovereignty | Scoop News

Rangatahi are calling for the Government to safeguard their future by allowing them a livable planet for generations to come. Furthermore, they are demanding the sovereignty of marginalised and indigenous communities both in Aotearoa, and across the globe.

Greta just keeps getting more and more awesome.

@gretathunberg you've been an inspiration to me since you first started your #SchoolStrike4Climate. Never stop. We young people can change the world for the better. A better world is possible.

So the turn-out at Melbourne's #SchoolStrike4Climate was rather poor. The last march I went to (pre-COVID) packed out the Treasury Gardens and half of Collins St. It would seem the ALP have done a great job at killing #ClimateCrisis and #MassExtinction as a mainstream issue. #auspol

Felt quite dispirited after the march. I spoke to a colleague who attended a Climate tipping-point workshop this week. His response was ‘policy obsession with emissions reduction that will fail. We are all living in denial. Get read for geoengineering and 6 degrees of warming.’
