“So the federal government says for childcare to be affordable, it should be about 7% of your income.

“Now, anybody who has a child who is listening to this is probably laughing right now. Because with average costs in Wisconsin, this is just average, a family would have to make $185,000 a year to afford one child in childcare.

“And I had two under the age of five.

“So that's our plan. We are going to treat it like the infrastructure that it is, and we are going to make sure families pay no more than 7% of their income in childcare.”

Sara Rodriguez is running August 11, 2026 for Wisconsin governor.

Notes I took during a live zoom call with TEAL Team

Nurse, does barn chores, union parents.
Experience -
2016 entered politics.
Proven beater of a republican district (Q: money?)
Haven’t been a politician as long.
Ran a big real large company.
I live in Waukesha County. I can pull voters from Red zip codes. And in my daily life I am more used to operating inside of the red culture we are campaigning against.
Very specific on anti-ICE
Husband is naturalized Mexican born
Has a 19 year old son.
I benefited from programs like homebuyer assistance. Everyone in the state should have the same chance.

Sara is a closer to the machine in this state than my other favorite, Kelda Roys but she seems clean enough and seems tougher. She’s a great communicator – maybe equal to Francesca Hong, even as fiery as Hong, and is more knowledgeable than Hong. She’s running a great campaign (having money and some connections to the state machine helps probably). For me, Rodriquez is runner up to Kelda Roys in a lot of ways but I think Roys has less of a path through this primary. Sara Rodriquez will be a great governor.

Undecided? How to Spot a Winner: 4 Candidate Traits That Never Lie

How they campaign.
If you're choosing an executive (e.g., a governor), heavily weigh the quality of their campaign. A campaign involves recruiting good people, raising money, and communicating ideas effectively. These are the exact skills you're hiring an executive to have. How they run and build a campaign—who they bring in, how fast they move, and how efficiently they operate—indicates how they would perform in any position.

---

Unbossed?
Yes, an executive brings in money, but from whom? Show me their funders, and I'll show you how they'll govern. Which funders do they refuse: AIPAC, foreign countries, or health insurance companies? Do they accept corporate PAC money. Are they funded by companies that give to both sides (i.e., do their donors also fund their Republican opponent)?

---
Avoid summaries
Hear them speaking in their own words. Search their name in your podcast app. Listen to anything where the candidate speaks unscripted. It's a job interview. They're interviewing to work for you.

---
Experience?
Know if they know what they're doing and aren't all talk. Demand specifics. Vague positions are a red flag.

A complicated birth becomes a tragedy. And that's what's coming.”
