In #Tennessee, which technically has open primaries, #Republican officials recently added language to ballots requiring voters to sign a statement “under penalty of perjury” in which they must “declare allegiance” to whichever party whose #primary they vote in.

Elsewhere, #partisans are actively fighting efforts to open up primaries. In #DC, #Democrats have yet to honor the will of voters, who overwhelmingly approved a 2024 referendum to open up partisan primaries to independent voters.

Sen Bill Cassidy’s defeat in Saturday’s #Republican #primary in #Louisiana will be covered as evidence of Trump’s grip over the party. #BillCassidy voted to convict #Trump after his second #impeachment following #Jan6, 2021, & this was payback.

At the same time, Cassidy’s third-place finish highlights another unfortunate trend in #US politics: the decline of open primaries across the country.

The country's democracy suffers as both parties close off elections.

With no #primary there is no #debate.

I like how David Crowley starts here but then I am frustrated that he says this at the end of the 30 minute interview where he hasn’t listed anything specific. And he clearly accepts big money. - he raised a ton, very quickly. Crowley: “We have to play the hand, we’re dealt.”
Which is very reminiscent of the finance reform *whateverism* of Ben Wikler.

“We’re all frustrated, not just with who's in the White House but also with many of our national Democrats. And we've seen that just recently with the shutdown deal and not really getting anything out of it. And so we have to put a real agenda.
It's not just about fighting back. We also gotta give something for people to fight for. And that's what we're gonna do on this campaign.”

A complicated birth becomes a tragedy. And that's what's coming.”

I'd like to see Tom Steyer drop out of the race and publicly shadow each move made by our next governor. A press release criticizing or echoing every policy decision made.

As a newcomer to politics, he owes us a trial run without having to elect him. The "Billionaire without political experience" thing has been a bust so far. 🇺🇲
