"(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" is a song co-written by the #soul singer #OtisRedding and the guitarist #SteveCropper. Redding recorded it twice in 1967, including just three days before his death in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. It was released on #StaxRecords' Volt label in 1968, becoming the first posthumous number 1 single in the US. It reached number 3 on the #UKSinglesChart.

This week's #alternateFridayMusic theme is #water.

This is an excellent live version of a soul classic, originally recorded in 1961:

William Bell: You Don't Miss Your Water (a live performance from 2013)

Bell had a concert in Helsinki in 2017, after the release of his wonderful comeback album, "This Is Where I Live", and of course sang this song as well.

Sad how Linda Lyndell, after recording this absolute #banger of a tune for #StaxRecords, was targed by the KKK for "crossing the race line" and ended up giving up her career

"Theme from Shaft", written and recorded by #IsaacHayes in 1971, is the #soul and #funk-styled #themeSong to the #MetroGoldwynMayer film Shaft. The theme was released as a single (shortened and edited from the longer album version) two months after the #moviesSoundtrack by #StaxRecords' Enterprise label. "#ThemeFromShaft" went to no. 2 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart (behind "#InnerCityBluesMakeMeWannaHoller" by #MarvinGaye).

"I Thank You" is a song written by #DavidPorter and #IsaacHayes originally recorded by #SamAndDave, released in early 1968. The single was Sam & Dave's final release on #StaxRecords, reaching No. 9 on the #Billboard Pop singles chart and No. 4 on the #RAndB chart. Shortly after its release, Stax severed its distribution deal with #AtlanticRecords and Sam & Dave, who were actually signed to Atlantic and loaned out to Stax and began recording for Atlantic proper.

For this week's #SaturdayOnStage I've chosen one of my favorite video clips, which is from the 1972 concert movie "Wattstax".

The Emotions: Peace Be Still (1972)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFWZcMxFmd0

At the time, the Emotions were making excellent secular recordings for Stax's Volt subsidiary, but it's a revelation to see how incredibly good they were when they were singing gospel music at a small Los Angeles church.
