Community Discussion on themes from Fires and Fascism: and how people are fighting back to create change.

The film shows communities responding to the threats of fires, big business, organised crime, and the far right, igniting hope and becoming more resilient.

Watch the film online via the link https://www.zeffy.com/en-GB/donation-form/watch-fires-and-fascism (if you can) before coming to the Library on Saturday to discuss local and global issues and anything you feel resonates from the film. If you can’t watch the film first then please come along anyway - the discussion is fuelled by local perspectives.

We know that fuel and community energy are on people’s minds especially in Scotland. The question of who benefits reveals why community power in every sense is most important.

What else is happening on Skye? The film shows action from #protest to #permaculture. What projects are going on in #Portree and what else is there space or need for?

Watch: Fires and Fascism

Trailers can be viewed here: https://fires-and-fascism.co.uk'Fires and Fascism' is my first film and I made it to tell the stories of how communities recovered from wildfires. On my journey, I found the story deepened and involved big business, organised crime, and the far right. This is a donation page to have the film sent to you by email. I am making this a 'pay what you can' model to make it accessible to people with low funds. I don't wish low finance to be a barrier to watching it. If you can pay more, please support the film financially as much as you wish. Some guidance on pricing:<£6 - unwaged/student£6 - general£11 - general with donation£25 - watch with a small group£100 - watch with a group of around 20 peopleFor groups of over 20, aim for £5 per personThe filming stage was crowdfunded and independent, and I left my paid work and my rented accommodation to take the film round the UK for community viewings with in-person Q&As. The film tour dates can be found here: https://fires-and-fascism.co.uk/#screening-datesThere are some venues I couldn't reach, and people who would like to see the film after it was shown in the area. Others wish to put on their own screening with a discussion afterwards. This method of sharing the film is for you.I hope this film helps to strengthen community in your area, softening the edges to include everyone, and ultimately extinguishing the growth of toxic ideology by giving everyone a sense of belonging and identity in healthier spaces. The film is also available in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German. Versions in French and Greek are being worked on. For these versions, please contact me: [email protected]

A Sense of Place in the Poetry of Màiri Mhòr nan Òran - The Bottle Imp

If you happen to be visiting Portree, the main settlement on the Isle of Skye, the chances are that you will take a wander down to the bay where in the flurry of tourists and opportunistic seagulls, it is easy to miss a plaque on a white-washed wall with the Gaelic words: ‘Moch ‘s mi […]

Over the sea to #Skye on the MV Glenachulish, the world’s last manually-operated #turntable #ferry.

Its unique design allows it to navigate the challenging docking conditions without much #infrastructure, allowing up to six cars to be transported on the deck, which the crew ** rotate by hand ** when it reaches its slipway.

(There is a short video in the link.)

The vessel was saved in 2007 when it was bought by the local community after its long-term skipper retired.
