Back into Mammoth cave again, this time on a route that was quite a bit tighter and more geologically variable than the last! And then we battled the weather to visit a different section of a region we'd visited a couple days before, trying to find the critters that were willing to be found during the dismal weather.

Researchers have discovered that the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is biofluorescent. A new study reveals that this iconic species emits turquoise light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. This phenomenon had gone unnoticed despite decades of study.

Interesting find in a puddle, maybe 30 cm deep: the gelatinous mass contains the spawn of the spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum), the green colour is caused by a symbiotic alga (Oophila amblystomatis) living inside the egg. The algae provide the embryo with oxygen and nutrients.
