#NewZealand - The Heads Repair It Free Team

1 Reotahi Road
Whangārei Heads 0174
New Zealand

"We meet every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm at The Deck cafe, McLeod Bay.

We still have plenty of spare capacity and now we can also offer some support with phones and computers. Just drop off anything you have which is broken, but may be repairable, in our box, located at the far end of the patio at The Deck, and attach a Job Request label. Alternatively use the contact link above or, even better, visit us in the far corner of The Deck between 10 and 12 on a Tuesday.

Finally, one other way you could show us your support, on top of your generous donations to our koha tin, is to sign the Greenpeace '#RightToRepair' petition.

About THRIFT (The Heads Repair It Free Team):

"In February 2021 John Green approached The Deck, the local Café, to ask if they would be willing to host a small group of tinkerers and have a box where people could leave repair jobs for them to tackle. They were so encouraging and have been wonderfully supportive throughout. John also bounced the idea around a few people in the local community and, encouraged by the feedback he received, he put a few posters around and utilised local social media groups to publicise an initial meeting. In early March, they had their first meeting - a very diverse team of four; John, Dave, Ray and Tamati, the keeper of most useful resources. 'If we ever say What we really need is ….”, then Tamati says, “You know, I think I might have one of those in my shed”!

During their first year they saved so many things from the dreaded landfill - over a hundred items tackled with a success rate greater than 80%. These vary tremendously from ripped wet-suits, through broken chairs and tables, to jammed toasters.

'What is amazing is the wonderful rapport we have - fixing stuff is fun, but the conversations we have are even more fun!' "

Garden gold: how to give common household waste new life as back yard essentials

From egg cartons to hard rubbish, everyday consumables can be repurposed into valuable gardening resources

by Connie Cao, Fri 10 Apr 2026

Excerpt: "Teresa Day, masterclass coordinator at #SustainableGardeningAustralia, says we need to stop using the word 'waste' and start using the word 'material'. She suggests reframing the idea of waste and considering: 'What am I going to do with this material, what can it be used for next?'

"The benefits of #repurposing or #rehoming materials extends further than just reducing landfill. Longtime gardener Olwyn Smiley runs a #permaculture garden consultation business and has found plenty of gems both kerbside and in local #BuyNothing groups.

"As Day’s late grandmother used to say, 'waste isn’t waste until you waste it'. There are numerous ways to turn common household waste into valuable resources for the garden."

#JohnDeere to Pay $99 Million in Monumental #RightToRepair Settlement

The ag manufacturing giant will also make digital diagnostic, maintenance, and repair tools available to third parties for 10 years.

by Caleb Jacobs
Published Apr 8, 2026

Excerpt: "The settlement also includes an agreement by Deere to provide 'the digital tools required for the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair' of tractors, combines, and other machinery for 10 years. That part is crucial, as farmers previously resorted to hacking their own equipment’s software just to get it up and running again. John Deere signed a memorandum of understanding in 2023 that partially addressed those concerns, providing third parties with the technology to diagnose and repair, as long as its intellectual property was safeguarded. Monday’s settlement seems to represent a much stronger (and legally binding) step forward.

"Ripple effects of this battle have been felt far beyond the sales floors at John Deere dealers, as the price of used equipment skyrocketed in response to the infamous service difficulties. Even when the cost of older #tractors doubled, farmers reasoned that they were still worth it because repairs were simpler and downtime was minimized. $60,000 for a 40-year-old machine became the norm."
