#Bicycles. #Clothes. #Lamps. Tools. #SmallAppliances. #KnifeSharpening. Computer Consultation

(Almost) Anything is Fixable.

Oak Park Fix-It Cafe is a group of community members who gather once a month to hang out, help anyone with any needed repairs, and (sometimes) even learn a new skill or two!

Come join your neighbors as we share what we have to fix what we need. Or just come as you are, take a load off, have a cup o’ joe and a cookie, and maybe make some new friends. If you need to just relax with friends, we’re here for that. If you want to get your hands a little dirty, we can help there, too.

This is always FREE, and always for EVERYONE—no matter your housing status, language or background."

We often don’t have the time or money or ability to replace something when it breaks or wears out, but what can we do?

For those who (like me) might have dipped their toes into sharpening their kitchen knives on a w(h)et stone but aren't very good yet:

The one video that eventually helped me was this 5-minute one, using the first technique (spine away), and switching ambidextrously/symmetrically to the other hand for the other side.

Happy chopping!

#RepairCafe Guide - Sharpening knives and scissors

Excerpt: "Albert recommends Japanese #whetstones instead [of a knife sharpener]. These are rectangular blocks grinding stone [I use one of these]. 'Many people know them. They are grey and light grey. You can buy them at the hardware store and you can get your knives pretty sharp with them.' With these sharpening stones, it’s vital to always sharpen the knife at the same angle. 'You have to keep the angle constant and go over the stone with it. If you start twisting your knife, you’ll never get it sharp.'

"There are all kinds of tutorials and instructional videos available on the internet about sharpening knives."
