Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornado Live, 2023 on Liberation Hall

Recorded Sept 1971 at the Troubadour in LA, but released in 2023 as part of Record Store Day. The Sir Douglas Quintet, led by Doug Sahm, out of San Antonio TX via San Francisco CA.

Great collection including probably their best known song “She’s About a Mover” and “Dynamite Woman.”

My copy via a private sale – from Precision Record Pressing (I assume there was only one pressing of this version).

The Oscar Peterson Trio, Con Alma: Live in Lugano, 1964 on Mack Avenue / Two Lions

First released in 2023, this set was recorded at Teatro Apollo in Lugano Switzerland by RSI Radiotelevisione svizzera (the Swiss Broadcasting subsidary covering Italian speaking Switzerland) on May 26, 1964. Mack Avenue Records is a Detroit label founded by Gretchen Valade who gets executive producer credit here. Two Lions is a label Peterson’s widow Kelly Peterson (also credited as producer) founded – the two lions being Peterson and Norman Granz.

This is the classic trio with Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums). Great recording, great mastering (by Blaise Faivre).

This is a thing of beauty! While not normally a fan of picture discs, this one is special to me. The band doesn't have that many studio albums and this comes with lot of good memories.

The record was made to resemble the 1978 Kiss "solo" records - including a nice poster in the same style! I would say this is even better than the 1978 solo records.

Time for some "Van Hagar". Mastered from the original master tapes by the great Bernie Grundman.

Sounds better than the CD copy I have and includes three bonus tracks: "The Dream is Over", "Eagles Fly" (a Sammy Hagar song) and "Mine All Mine".

Wow! What a nice surprise. I was not expecting this band to be so good! This is a Latin-funk / Rock fusion band from Texas and this album is a Black Sabbath covers album.

Amazing renditions of Black Sabbath classics. Highly recommended.
