Arnie’s New Year’s Radio Celebrations List

Arnie the DX Man has published his annual list of New Year celebrations on worldwide radio bands. The list starts on page 5.

Another list from me – this time I'm encouraging you to catch New Year 2026 celebrations from around the world with #shortwave, #mediumwave & #longwave #radio, as long as these broadcasts are still there & can be accessed either on your own radio or via remote SDRs 🌍docs.google.com/document/d/1…

The list includes lots of remote SDR opportunities, because international broadcasting on the airwaves has obviously diminished, compared to the 1980s.
Arnie starts with Kiribati, at 10:00 UTC, but the first real opportunity should be Radio New Zealand Pacific, on 13755 kHz at 11:00 UTC – the New Year’s eve program starts at 06:00 UTC (so it’s under way now), and according to Alan Roe, the program host "will often respond live on-air to emails received during the programme". So let’s keep him posted about the relevance of shortwave transmissions – and wish him and everyone there a happy new year.

The war between the Trump Administration and National Public Radio (NPR) includes courtroom battles and boardroom battles, which are described here:

Katherine Maher has taken an unyielding approach to NPR’s biggest battles — which has sometimes put her at odds with her colleagues in public media.

Radio Slovakia Shortwave: no Decision yet

Originally, a decision or comment from Radio Slovakia International (RSI) management about future shortwave transmissions had been expected on December 19, but the story wears on (RSI German on December 28).
So the good news is that RSI programs will continue to be produced in 2026, with or without shortwave. That’s apparently true for all the station’s current languages, but that’s just my impression from what I heard.

The responsibility for deciding about shortwave transmissions was reportedly transferred to a newly-created technical department in 2024, so RSI itself is no longer in charge of making contracts with transmission sites (RSI German on November 9).

Writing Prompt: Why do (or did) you listen to Shortwave?

How did you get to listen to shortwave radio? And why do you still listen (if you do)?

Is it because the internet isn’t reliable? Or because no bad guy will take your radio away, because it has become too cheap by now, and nobody cares to steal or to pawn it?

Don’t laugh, it did happen in the past.

“Gruß an Bord”, not the Critic’s Choice this Year

Call me Mr. Pedantic, but I don’t want a podcast-on-air with a newly-married German lady talking to the radio host in Hamburg from her house’s dining area in New Zealand! To make it worse, it was old stuff – she said that it was winter in New Zealand, so the program must have been recorded some time ago.

Glenn Hauser’s "World of Radio" newsletter suggests that Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) eventually made it to Duckdalben, Hamburg’s International Seamen’s Club, but by then, I had tuned to 7410 kHz, waiting for Vatican Radio coverage on the Holy Mass of the Night.

Indeed, the only thing broadcast live about "Gruß an Bord" is the NDR news bulletin, read at 18:00 UTC. They used to have a live transmission from a Christmas mass from varying places in Germany, when the format ran for four hours rather than only three, but that is also a thing of the past.

"If Gruß an Bord wasn’t there already, it would have to be invented right now" a new anchor of the program has been quoted.
Take it from me, NDR: you’ve re-invented it. And please don’t take that as a compliment.

Merry Christmas!

Shortwave for Europe still an Option at Radio Slovakia International

There are no plans at the top of Radio Slovakia International to end shortwave transmissions, according to the station’s German-service mailbag show. The director had told a meeting last week that she was having talks with the technical department about the transmission of the German service on shortwave. It was expected that offers that had been collected would now be studied, and a decision be taken within days. The results could be known by next Sunday.
