I've been thinking recently about how the current LLM craze (and the cryptocurrency craze before it) is quite like the "Cash for Ash" scandal in Northern Ireland:

At its kernel, we've got this terrible idea, but we've also got externalisation of costs so that it's the users of the system that are the ones choosing to ignore the environmental costs presumably out of some sort of economic rationale.

If they are comparable, and I think they are, there needs to be a reckoning, not just for the users, but for the crafters at the centre of the scheme.

Renewable Heat Incentive scandal - Wikipedia

> While permitless carrying may have some effect on deterring offences such as robberies, it is inadequate in the face of grievance and politically driven violence, said Brandon del Pozo, an assistant professor of medicine and health policy at Brown University.
> “The deterrence effect of concealed carry only applies to rational actors. And you get to a point in political extremism where you’re not dealing with rational people,” he said.
