I've been thinking recently about how the current LLM craze (and the cryptocurrency craze before it) is quite like the "Cash for Ash" scandal in Northern Ireland:

At its kernel, we've got this terrible idea, but we've also got externalisation of costs so that it's the users of the system that are the ones choosing to ignore the environmental costs presumably out of some sort of economic rationale.

If they are comparable, and I think they are, there needs to be a reckoning, not just for the users, but for the crafters at the centre of the scheme.

RT: @mr_stephen_moss Zack Polanski makes the point that these massive contracts handed to Palantir and others with the support & recommendation of Mandelson and his lobby groups, need to be revisited, investigated and scrutinized.
And is that #cashforash Arlene Foster on the panel? πŸ€”
