Santa Monica should ditch its plurality at-large council elections and come into compliance with the California Voting Rights Act. But winner-take-all district elections aren't the only possible solution. Proportional #RankedChoiceVoting gives minority groups of all kinds the best opportunity to elect representatives of their choice, avoids spoilers and wasted votes, and ensures the large majority of voters actually get to choose a winner.

It's election season, so here's a thought experiment. Imagine if you could just vote for the person you liked the most, even if they were a fringe candidate with little chance of winning. And you didn't care because, if they lost, you had a second choice vote. And if they didn't win, your third choice probably would.
Imagine an election where the candidates needed to appeal to as many voters as they could. Wouldn't that be nice?

Carney’s Liberals and Poilievre’s Conservatives want nothing more but for the NDP to disappear so they can maintain their comfortable 2 party system, reliant on begging for strategic votes from the left to win power.
Every opportunity they get to see the NDP flounder, they will rejoice in.
Stay true to the party next election, avoid #cdnpoli ‘til all this gloating and smugness subsides, and NEVER vote strategically again (no matter how much they beg you).
At this point #Canada deserves whatever it gets under FPTP voting. Frustrating to feel this way, but seeing today’s prevalent smug attitude directed at disillusioned NDP voters angers me as much as all these turncoat politicians shuffling across to give Mark Carney his manufactured majority.

The only reason I am struggling to decide who to vote for in the #Illinois senate race is the lack of #RankedChoiceVoting. I know who I support, but I also know the polling says the worst candidate is in the lead (naturally, he has the most corporate money), so do I back the 2nd place and hope she can overtake him?
This would be a complete non-issue with RCV. It's just plain stupid that we still use this broken plurality system.
