Raj Chowdhury of Swansea’s Raj Kitchen retains ‘Regional Chef of the Year’ title at Welsh awards

The awards, organised by ChefOnline, recognise Asian restaurants and chefs across Wales. This year’s ceremony attracted hundreds of entries, with Chowdhury once again impressing judges enough to retain his crown.

Chowdhury opened Raj Kitchen in December 2023 on the site of the former Pizza Express opposite Swansea Castle. The two‑floor restaurant seats around 130 diners and has quickly established itself on the city’s dining scene.

Speaking after the award, Chowdhury said:

“To win this award once was incredible – to do it again is beyond anything I expected. It still feels surreal. I’m just a chef who loves what he does, and to be recognised like this is genuinely humbling.”

He credited his team, led front‑of‑house by his wife Enakshi, for the restaurant’s success.

“This isn’t just my award, it’s our award,” he said.

Chowdhury has previously spoken about his approach to cooking, drawing on family recipes and traditional methods. Among the restaurant’s most popular dishes are a paneer butter masala and a lamb kala bhuna based on his mother’s recipe.

Looking ahead, he said his next ambition is to secure an AA Rosette, which would be a first for an Indian restaurant in Wales.

Raj Kitchen in Swansea emerges as a culinary gem, as its founder takes home the top prize at the UK’s most celebrated Pan Asian cuisine awards.

This win marks a momentous milestone in his culinary journey, made all the more remarkable by the fact that this was his first time attending the ARTA’s, which were recently held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

Since opening Raj Kitchen in December 2023 with his wife Enakshi, Raj Chowdhury has quickly carved out a name for himself and his restaurant, which overlooks the historic Swansea Castle.

Nestled on the former site of Pizza Express, Raj Kitchen offers a unique dining experience that draws on family recipes, a devotion to using fresh ingredients, and a deep respect for Indian culinary traditions.

Raj Chowdhury, reflecting on his ARTA victory, said:

“I’ve never been to an event like the ARTA’s before, so to be honest, I felt a bit out of my depth walking into such a prestigious room full of established names.

“I’m so incredibly humbled and proud to have won this award on my first go. It’s not something I expected, but it’s a testament to the hard work of my amazing team and the support of the Swansea community.”

Raj Kitchen, which boasts seating for 60 guests downstairs and 70 upstairs, has become a go-to destination for lovers of authentic Indian cuisine in Swansea.

The core of its menu is built on traditional Indian recipes handed down through Raj’s family, including his mother’s treasured dishes. Each meal is crafted with an emphasis on simplicity and authenticity – no pastes or shortcuts, just pure, fresh ingredients.

This approach has not only set Raj Kitchen apart but has become the hallmark of Raj Chowdhury’s culinary philosophy.

Signature dishes such as the Chicken Paneer Butter Masala, made with tender chicken and soft paneer in a velvety spiced sauce, and the Lamb Kala Bhuna, a rich dish following his mother’s own recipe that uses soaked tea-leaf water for added depth, have already earned a devoted following.

Raj’s dedication to cooking from scratch, using only the finest spices and fresh ingredients, has resonated with food lovers across Wales.

Raj Chowdhury credits his mother’s influence as a driving force behind his menu, explaining

“My mother taught me that good food doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s about bringing out the flavours of simple ingredients and letting them shine. I think that’s what people appreciate most about the food at Raj Kitchen – it’s not overly elaborate, but it’s full of love and care.”

Looking ahead, Raj Chowdhury is not resting on his laurels. His eyes are firmly set on new horizons, with ambitions of securing an AA Rosette, which would make Raj Kitchen possibly the first Indian restaurant in Wales to achieve this coveted recognition.

“Winning Wales Chef of the Year is a huge honour, but I’m already thinking about what’s next. My goal is to push the boundaries of what we offer at Raj Kitchen, and that means going for the AA Rosette.

“We’re also working on a new dessert and cocktail menu to bring something different to the table – I want to continue surprising our guests with new flavours and experiences.”

With a team of nine dedicated staff, and a mission to elevate Indian cuisine in Wales, Raj Chowdhury is well on his way to achieving his ambitions. His award-winning approach to cooking, combined with a constant drive for innovation, positions Raj Kitchen as a rising star in the UK’s vibrant food scene.

The ARTA’s, which have grown to become the largest and most prestigious celebration of Pan Asian cuisine in the UK, saw hundreds of restaurants and chefs from across the country competing for top honours.

Raj Chowdhury’s win is a major accolade, not only for his restaurant but for the entire Welsh culinary scene, shining a spotlight on the growing diversity and excellence of food offerings in the region.
