Heard the news of Jerry’s passing while listening to NPR on the way home from my summer camp job. I pulled off to the side of the road as they played Jerry’s version of I Shall Be Released. Shed some roadside tears and eventually made my way home. I had largely moved on from seeing the GD by that point, catching only one show that summer. I was in 6th gr standing by my locker when Sam walked by and said “Jerry is dead.” At first, I had no clue who he was talking about but then he said, “you know, the grateful dead guy.” It didn’t really hit me at all tbh, but as I became more into the Dead over the next few yrs bc of Sam (May he rest in peace), I began to feel even more connected to Jerry to the point where it really got me when I thought “I will never see this band live.” Some are meant to live in our hearts that way. #RIPJerry

Pounding on the steering wheel, crying, shouting “No, no, noooo!!!” I heard it on the radio just as I was pulling into a parking space. I had just moved 1500 miles and knew no one. Thank goodness for Boston’s bar, where Xtra Ticket played Dead songs every Thursday night.
