I’m not sure how commonly known this combo tip is for US travelers in Europe, but:

1) Use a Visa/MC that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees if possible (most travel-oriented CCs have this benefit)

2) If offered by the terminal or ATM, NEVER accept the transaction in USD. Charge it in Euros. This is often phrased as “reject conversion” and sounds scary but it will save you money by letting your bank determine the exchange rate (in your favor) instead of the merchant choosing in its favor.
