What's the etiquette behind quote reposting on #Mastodon? (like linking to someone's post directly and adding onto it, as it's not officially implemented. I saw a post recently by an unofficial news outlet for one of my fandoms, and it featured something funny that I wanted to add onto. But the joke I want to make directly contradicts the point of the joke the snippet made.

So if I do it directly underneath their post it might be seen as me clowning around in their circus. Plus, it would be less visible to others :P. As much as quote reposts are looked down on here, I think in this case it would actually be better to not make the joke chain under their post.

So what's the etiquette? Do I boost the original first? Do I like...announce under their post that I made a post inspired by their post?

What if, instead of quote-retweets, we design a boost-reply? I.e., it will appear as a reply to a thread, but for your followers, or anyone viewing your profile, it will appear as a regular post, and show the original post above/under it?

I wonder how quote retweets would look implemented as a "retweet with reply". Something like how you see replies to a post in your timeline if you follow both the original poster and the person replying. #QuoteRetweet #mastodon

#PostEmbed / #EmbeddedPost / #QuotePost / #PostQuote
(Also mislabeled as #QuoteRetweet / #QRT, despite the fact that other sites, like Tumblr, do it better.)

I think this one is inevitable, in the sense that, with all the content creators who want this, especially journalists fleeing Twitter, someone is going to build some sort of standardized patch to allow this functionality, and then a chunk of the servers will have it, unless it's implemented in the main build before it catches on. People have been asking for this one for years, some way to cohesively embed someone else's post within Mastodon, and right now, we see tons of different ways people are trying to work around not having that feature: links, screenshots, boosted replies, etc. Eventually, at the very least, someone is going to say "links to Mastodon posts should embed themselves like other links." and from then the cat's out of the bag.

I feel like I need a kind of daily Fediverse news service to explain the constantly shifting complaints, alliances, backstabs, rebellions, changes in underlying structure, appearance of new app clients and features, defederations, re-federations, old hats complaining about newcomers, newcomers complaining that Mastodon isn't Twitter, etc., etc., etc...to survive here.

At the very least a map.

QTs are a performative act that does nothing other than splinter a discussion and try to put the spotlight onto yourself.

If you have some unique take on an issue then write it up and post it.

2a: I do think there could be levels of this to be more accommodating for journalists and organizers. So the ability to consent to quote boosts should have options. You could consent to everything. You could be asked before being quote boosted, or you can opt out entirely.

Okay so to expand on this, ideas I have that might make things better for quote boosts,

1: Include the ability for the person being boosted to be included in the conversations like they would if they had been normally boosted. This way they can see what people are saying and participate in the conversation.

Feeling like an old man when it comes to chat around the quote retweet feature not existing on here.

"Back in my my day we didn't have quote retweets, we just did a retweet then stuck LRT (as in "see last retweet") at the start of the next post immediately after it"

"And before that, we didn't even have retweets, we just copied a post, and stuck RT at the beginning (with an @reply to give credit)"

"Hell, before that, hashtags and @replys weren't even built in to Twitter, they just became a common convention amongst it's users that Twitter then later adopted and incorporated into the app"

"And another thing... Twitter used to put out RSS feeds. Twitter, in it's early days wasn't a walled garden!"

etc. etc.

On twitter I would sometimes #quoteRetweet cruel tweets directed at me so that everybody can see what I deal with online on a regular basis, which is my argument for why mastodon should have quote tweets because it doesn't work if you just Boost a harassment toot with 0 framing.
