Frank Davies@lmgenealogy #rclone has some support for #protondrive. Sadly someone will need to open a shell to get it working, but I use rclone mount (cache mode full) a lot for dealing with remote files.
For distro, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora are all solid for general use and fairly beginner friendly.
