Because that strategy worked out so fucking well for the Democrats didn't it!
You cannot build your election strategy, let alone your party identity, around "we're your only chance to stop X destroying everything" and not expect a fair chunk of people to come to the conclusion that means the system has failed and voting to preserve it is a pointless endeavor.

Does this illustrate a dilemma of #popularism? #GayMarriage was successfully implemented (from NY as first major state in 2011 to Obergefell in 2015) once support reached 40-60%. But it took that implementation to ramp up further growth in support when it had stagnated in the decade before.
