Fairy-tale village by the sea — Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Wildlife at Point Lobos Natural Reserve includes sea lions and birds. There are no wolves - the name refers to the barking of sea lions. On this trip we saw countless brown pelicans, cormorants, gulls and other birds I couldn't identify. The Great Egret pictured below is surrounded by jellyfish. There are mussels and other tidal creatures everywhere. The sea lions are resident, and some times of the year you can see the gray whale migration right off shore.

Two examples of the #lichen at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. I'm not an expert, but the internets suggest the first image is Lace Lichen (Ramalina menziesii), and the second is either Xanthoria or a type of algae called Trentepohlia.

After sunrise in Pacific Grove we grabbed coffee and drove to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Like all CA State properties the gates don't open until 8:00am so sunrise is out of the question. Despite living in CA for decades and driving past it countless times we had never been there.

These two photos, taken later in the morning, give a sense of the landscape.

Quiet Morning at The Point:

Taken early on a very still morning at the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in California, with no sounds other than the occasional lapping of the waves along the shore.

We have truffula trees! They're just very very tiny trees. 🙂
