#plantechat #PlantExplorer
Garlic cress (Peltaria alliacea) is like a more refined version of its sister species Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). It is also reliably perennial and -which is rare for Brassicacea plant - spreads through rhizomes. I think it's a winner. Surprisingly, you almost can't find it on the market. And the few that sell it basically sell the same clone - so it won't set seed. After some years of working on this I finally did it and now have plants that set seed. Very happy about this! #PeltariaAlliacea #Seed #Domestication #PlantExplorer #Perennials #Edimentals

#OTD Lester Rowntree, American #Botanist & #Writer, is born.

A fierce #Conservationist, Lester believed living w/ plants led to understanding. She was often compared to the incredible #PlantExplorer David Douglas, but unlike Douglas, who died young, Lester lived to be 100.

She wrote,

"I [approach] plants from the # Gardener's, not the scientist's, standpoint...

I [write] from my own notes, taken on the spot, of the things the #Plants have told me in personal interviews."

#OTD Charles Budd Robinson, #Canadian #Botanist, died.

He worked at the #NewYork #Botanical #Garden before going to #Manila as an #Economic Botanist w/ the Bureau of #Science.

Charles joined an expedition to modern-day #Ambon - an #Island in #Indonesia. After setting out alone, he entered a village & was killed when the people feared he was a #Headhunter.

The death shocked the island & populated areas where Charles was known as "Doctor #Flower."

On the #Niger #Expedition, he shared #Hardships in his #Jounal.

"After endless #Labor, [I have] ill-conditioned #Plants. I have #Sacrificed every convenience to gain room, & overcome #Dampness of the #Ship...but w/o #Success."

The #Mineralogist Charles Roscher tended to Ted for 13 days. On Dec 17th, Ted asked if they were set for their trip & then peacefully passed away.
