RE: https://hoosier.social/@NefariousAryq/115736943505244441

I spoke with the maintainer of this project and GOOD NEWS! He found that the underlying data changed and that is what caused precipType to always return `none`. He has already made a fix and it will deploy this evening.

Could not be more pleased. If you need a Weather API that doesn't break the bank (including historical weather data which often does), definitely check out Pirate Weather!

Anyone using the Pirate Weather API?

I'm using the 'Time Machine' endpoint, and the `currently` node (for conditions at the time/location requested) always returns "precipType": "none".

I have a hard time believing not one of these incidents occurred when it was raining, so feels like maybe I'm missing something with the results. The docs don't indicate any specific conditions that would be required to return precipType.

Hmm? 🤔 🧐

Alright, not bad. I'm using #pirateweather for most of the data now and I like the format.

It was a little tricky setting it up, as it is not an official Home Assistant integration. Hopefully it sticks for a while.

I'm gonna get a little DHT22 sensor for a Wemos D1 mini and try to get at least temperature and humidity locally soon.

For Homeassistant I'm currently using Met Éireann - the Irish met service, I like but haven't got around to re-installing #PirateWeather - http://pirateweather.net/en/latest/ha/

Just got your #PirateWeather email update @alexander0042 and am glad to see you're on Mastodon.

I use your service for my #HomeAutomation system via the #FantasticWeather plug-in.

Followed!

Den #Wetterbericht hole ich mir inzwischen von @merrysky mit Daten von #pirateweather. Keine Werbung, keine Tracker, ziemlich genaue Darstellung, übersichtlich präsentiert.

Hello, I just saw your mastodon account and wanted to say that your #PirateWeather API has enabled me to continue using a PHP weather script by Ken True at https://saratoga-weather.org/scripts-PWforecast.php that previously used the #DarkSky API. Very simple replacement in a couple settings variables and the script works beautifully, exactly as it had before under DarkSky.

Also, your https://pirateweather.net/ site was helpful and your https://merrysky.net/ site is very nice with the mapping included.

Who is using PirateWeather? - Pirate Weather

@foosel Ooh, #PirateWeather looks very nice too, given that it's a drop-in replacement for Dark Sky's API!

Somehow both of these have flown under my radar so far.

What's neat about https://open-meteo.com is that you don't even need an API key, so it has a very low barrier to entry as well.

Either way, I'm done with using the free tier of commercial weather services - they certainly aren't any more reliable than their free and open counterparts, at least as far as long term availability goes.
