Our Seckel Pear tree has a big crop of pears. I’ve picked about half them, and they’re on the porch where I can sort them as they ripen.

Seckel Pears (aka Sugar Pears) have been widely planted on homesteads since the 1800s.

An invasive weed from Europe found in NZ is ragwort, it has bright yellow daisy like flowers and can grow up to 1.2 m tall. The plant spreads easily through the wind. It is avoided by cattle so overtakes pasture but sheep will eat it. Our orchard used to contain some, the Shropshires ate it. It can be toxic to cattle if in hay but luckily not sheep. www.teepeecider.co.nz #sheep #ragwort #orchard
The two HowgateWonder #apples I picked before #StormFloris to protect the young tree from wind damage have been turned into apple sauce cookies - all eaten as soon as they were cool enough. This season’s first #orchard baking!
The daffodils at Beau Vista orchard are amazing this year. This cute miniature one is called ‘Tete a Tete’. They are well suited to New Zealand climatic conditions all across the motu. They prefer full sun but tolerate some shade such as under apple trees in a traditional orchard. Well draining soil as we have here in the Taratahi plains are best. #daffodils #Aotearoa #orchard www.teepeecider.co.nz
Sunny start to the day after a couple of cloudy ones. Snow on the Tararua ranges. This is the Waiohine river a major tributary of the Ruamahanga the main river of the Taratahi plains. A braided river now with stopbanks to reduce flooding. Close to Beau Vista orchard. #orchard #wairarapa #Aotearoa #NewZealand #Tararua #mountains #waiohine #river #Taratahi
#Windfall is not usually a good word for #orchard owners - thanks to #StormFloris there will be no #pears again this year (would have been our first crop). I took the big Howgate Wonder #apples off to reduce the risk to the tree.
