Day 43. OpenFlights World Airports ✈️

Built an interactive 3D globe from the OpenFlights Airports Database, mapping 8,000+ airports as queryable points.

The challenge was performance at scale. Plotting is easy, but keeping interaction fluid is not. InstancedMesh optimises rendering, while Raycaster and CSS2DObject keep selection and labels responsive.

#100DayMapChallenge Day 43/100

#ThreeJS #WebGL #Geospatial #OpenFlights #OpenSource

Took a few hours of very distracted work, but I'm all caught up on my #OpenFlights entries. Whew! It was fun reliving all of those memories.

As you can see from the first image, 2024 was quite busy and took the brunt of data entry time.

Second map is the result of 20 years of travel. Twenty years. Ugh, I'm old and my bones hurt.

Wow, I haven't updated #OpenFlights since 2019. They have a .csv import option, let's see if I can get into trouble...

ALSO: Am I the only #AvGeek using openflights.org? Seems like folks either use flightmemory or FR24's purchased flight diary.
