On the 4th of May 2026, the OmniOSce Association has released a new stable version of #OmniOS - The Open Source Enterprise Server OS. The release comes with many tool updates, brand-new features and additional hardware support. For details see the release notes.

Another issue I had with OmniOS. Made a pkg update and for some reason it messed up my nginx install for Nagios. Nagios was still running OK but could not access the web interface. So I decided to make a separate Ubuntu zone to run Nagios in it. #omnios #omniosce #solaris

Here is the thing. Decided to install OmniOS to a nvme. Installation went smoothly but could boot the new install. Figured out I had to wipe the nvme drive (before the installation the drive was running Linux). #omnios #omniosce #linux

Migrate a FreeBSD bhyve virtual machine to OmniOS

I have a home lab running FreeBSD bhyve hypervisor and a collo server running OmniOS. From time to time, I migrate some VMs from one to the other. It is very simple when using ZFS and sharing a compatible bhyve implementation.

Using #neovim in #omniosce , it just needs porting a couple of lsp servers. But overall experience is really good.

@anubhav @Tubsta @dexter @alelab It seems that the solution is to just use #FreeBSD or #Illumos (#OmniOS, #OmniOSCE, #SmartOS) with hardware from SuperMicro (or others) and #FreeNAS / #TrueNAS as UI and related via shell script. I believe that this is the route. The original source of FreeNAS was the #BSDrouter project (rather than a company). #Unix #ZFS #OpenZFS
