A hard freeze and snow (1 in/2.5 cm) are forecast overnight, so this may well be the last hurrah for the garden.

The warm autumn so far meant that the leaves of the oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers') are only just starting turning. I doubt I shall have long to enjoy their crimson shade.

Dug up pelargonium geraniums to overwinter indoors, and brought in a few pots to see how long their annuals can make it. Also pulled the very last green tomatoes.

Flowers are starting to open on the oak leaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers') in the front garden. It has been about four or five years since I planted what was a rather small plant in this spot, to replace a dwarf juniper that had been struggling, and every year this hydrangea gets more and more beautiful. In the autumn, the foliage turns a spectacular shade of red (hence the variety name 'Ruby Slippers'). I hope to have many more years of enjoyment from this plant.

Spring is my favourite time of year in the garden, because I enjoy watching plants emerge from their winter slumber. I thought I might share two examples today from the front garden. The leaves on this oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers') are just beginning to push out. This is the third year I have had this plant, and it keeps looking better and better.
